EASTERN REGION HELPS OUT.

On the 12th and 19th January Eastern Region hosted 10 children from the Kooloora Vacation care in The Shed. This was as a result of an enquiry from the leader of the vacation care group to the shed to see if we could get the children to make something. The children would be about 10 years of age.

After some thought it was decided to get the children to make a simple Bookstand. A prototype was made up by David Caruana. After approval, we informed the Vacation Care leader that we could indeed help out with a project for the children to make. Cost would be $10 per child.

On 12th January the children and Supervisors arrived at the shed. A short safety briefing and orientation was given and the children then started work. Under strict supervision the children used the Bandsaw, Drill Press and Belt Sanders. Mario Dato and myself were kept very busy supervising and we would like to thank the Vacation Care people for helping out.

It was all such a great success that a 4 hour session became 6 hours and most of the children completed the job in that time. A few came back on the Friday to complete the job by decorating the Bookstand with the pyro graph.

It is something that we would certainly consider doing again. It was a great experience for all the children, and who knows we may have some new woodworkers in the making.
